You're without a lighter/matches in an urban or wilderness survival situation, could you start a fire ? Fire is heat, light, comfort, safety, used for cooking, purifying water and making tools. This workshop will cover all aspects of friction fire, plus we'll also cover 6 'modern' methods for starting a fire.
Friction fire is said to be easy to do but very hard to learn. I promise that you will let out a wild man/wild woman yell when you blow your first tinder bundle into a flame, that was started from a coal, by your handmade bow and drill setup. It is an amazing feeling !! I have literally started thousands of friction fires and I never tire of this magic.
This is what we will cover in the workshop.
Several types of fire lays. The teepee, log cabin, shed and my favorite, which is a blend of them all. Also we will cover fire pit size, location and distance from your tent or natural structure.
The class will discuss how to find dry wood and tinder even in the wettest of conditions.
You will see and and have the opportunity to use 6 of the most common, contemporary fire starting devices.
You will make your own bow drill set up in class, using nothing but natural materials. This will be yours to keep and all materials will be supplied.
We'll cover coal extenders, what types of wood that make the best bows, spindle, fire boards, hand holds and tinder bundles. And we should have time for a short hike to ID some of these trees.
You will learn how to make cordage from natural materials, you may not have a boot lace or piece of string when it is most needed. Cordage is one of the most important skills to have in any wilderness emergency.
The July 15 class registration is now closed. I can also schedule a class at your location with a minimum of 4 people. Please dress appropriately, bring food and water. and be prepared to get fired up! Complete bow drill and pump drill setups will also be available for purchase at class. The workshop will be held in Palmyra, Va.22963. Directions will follow as class time nears. This workshop can also be held at a location/date of your choice with a minimum of 4 attendees.
